Candidate reception and forum slated for April 20

The Alvin-Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce will host an informative candidate forum on Thursday, April 20 at Church of the Harvest, 7505 Wilson Dr., Manvel from 6 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Positions on the May 6 ballot include Mayor, City Council Place #3 and City Council Place #5. The elected officials will hold their office for a period of three years from May 2017 to May 2000. All officials are elected at large.

Johanna McWilliams, President/CEO of the Alvin Manvel Chamber of Commerce, sent a form out to candidates that included a brief biography and several questions such as: Why are you running and what time commitment can you make to the position? How will city government improve of be strengthened as a result of the leadership, drive, energy and vision that you bring to the city? What do you consider the most pressing issue facing business owners today?

The questions that will be asked by the facilitator will have been submitted on paper during the reception period. They will not be directed at a particular candidate, and will only be questions, not statements.

The forum schedule is:
6:00 p.m. Reception/Mixer
6:30 p.m. Welcome/Open Program
6:35 p.m. Opening Statements from each candidate (3 minutes each)
6:55 p.m. Questions from facilitator/moderator (1 minute for each answer)
7:40 p.m. Closing Candidate Statements (3 minutes each)
8:00 p.m. Reception/Mixer
8:15 p.m. Event ends

A voters’ guide will be released and Manvel residents should be aware of the following important dates: April 24 is the first day for early voting by personal appearance. Tuesday, May 2 is the last day of regular early voting by personal appearance.
Saturday, May 6 from 7 .a.m to 7 p.m. is the general election date.
