It seemed that Texas City had a comfortable 5-2 lead as Manvel entered the bottom of the sixth inning.
Texas City certainly wasn’t ready for what was to come as the Lady Mavs shifted into another gear to pull out a crucial 10-7 district win.
The Lady Stings jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman Deborah Jaeger scored from third on a wild pitch.
Manvel answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the first, and the Lady Stings averted more danger when junior center fielder Sydney Moore gunned down a runner at home plate to end the inning.
Junior Lily Reid led off the top of the second with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.
Later in the inning, senior Annie Ruiz scored on a fielder’s choice attempt and senior Samantha Martinez drove in Jaeger on an RBI single to regain the lead 4-2.
Texas City added another run in the fourth inning when Martinez singled, scoring Jaeger again for a 5-2 lead.
That’s when Manvel erupted for eight runs in the sixth to take a 10-5 lead aided by a bases-clearing triple.
The Lady Stings scored a couple of runs in the seventh, but Manvel shut them down for the 10-7 victory.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Mavs also pulled out an up-and-down affair with Ball High to get an 18-12 win in a slugfest.
Leading the offensive charge against Texas City was Brianna Garcia who was 3-for-4 with one run scored and four RBIs including a triple. Alayna Pippin was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Alexis Uresti was 1-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs. Cecily Macias was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Alyssa Villanueva was 3-for-3 with one run scored. Ariyon Woodard was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
