Bus collision results in death of two local residents

An Alvin ISD student and his grandmother were killed Monday, May 22 when their car was rear ended by a speeding AISD school bus.

The accident occurred after 3 p.m. when the bus driver collided with a car with four people inside at a red light near Highway 6 and County Road 99 in Manvel.

The child was a Pre-K student from EC Mason Elementary School and his grandmother, Karen Salazar was from Manvel. The child’s grandfather was also injured and is being treated at a hospital for a non-life-threatening head injury. A fourth person was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Only the bus driver was on the bus. Police report the bus driver was at fault and the driver is being checked for intoxication.

“Our hearts and minds are grieving right now for the members of the family involved in this unthinkable tragedy. This tragedy is too difficult to process and the emotions are too raw to feel anything but hurt and sadness for the family. This family is at the forefront of our minds at this time,” Alvin ISD Superintendent Buck Gilcrease said.
