Scalise, Oilers, Eagles honored on All-District baseball team

Pearland shared the 2017 District 23-6A baseball title and the Oilers had six players named to the All-District 23-6A first-team while head coach Anthony Scalise was named 23-6A “Co-Coach of the Year.”

Named to the first-team for the Oilers included catcher Jacob Whitehead, shortstop Parker DeLeon, third baseman Matt Adams, pitcher Colby Casey, and outfielders Aeneas Enriquez and Andrew Flores.

Scalise has done an incredible job of leading the Pearland baseball program since he took over the helm in 2011.

In 2014, Pearland beat Brazoswood 5-3 to win the 5A Region III championship sending them to the 5A state baseball tournament. The Oilers lost in the semifinals, but at least they were dancing for the state title.

Pearland had two players who were unanimous picks in Adams and Casey.

Matt Adams hit .333 at the plate after going 8-for-24 with one double, seven RBIs, and five runs scored.

Colby Casey was strong on the mound as he pitched 27.2 innings with 5-0 mark for a .253 ERA with 15 walks and 36 strikeouts.

Jacob Whitehead hit .389 going 14-for-36 with two doubles, 12 RBIs, and 16 runs scored. Parker DeLeon hit .371 going 13-for-35 with two doubles, one triple, one home run, 10 RBIs, and 11 runs scored. Aeneas Enriquez hit .500 going 10-for-20 with four doubles, one home run, eight RBIs, and nine runs scored. Andrew Flores hit .400 going 8-for-20 with two doubles, seven RBIs, and seven runs scored.

The Oilers had two players named to the second-team. They were designated hitter John Thomas and first-baseman Joseph Barfield.

Dawson finished fourth in the district standings and they had two players named to the first-team. They were pitcher Adam Houghtaling and outfielder Kaden Ingram.

Adam Houghtaling hit .341 going 15-for-44 with three doubles, 12 RBIs, and 11 runs scored. Houghtaling was also the pitching ace for the Eagles as he tossed 57.1 innings with a 5-0 mark with one save, 53 strike outs, and a 1.21 ERA.

Kaden Ingram hit .368 going 23-for-83 with three doubles, one home run, eight RBIs, and 16 runs scored.

Dawson’s second-team selections were pitchers Brett Jackson and Austin Langland, third baseman Austin Pratt, and outfielders Baidon Broeder and Jaedon Compton.

George Ranch head coach Greg Kobza shared “Coach of the Year” honors with Scalise while the Most Valuable Player award went to George Ranch pitcher Joseph Menefee with the Newcomer of the Year award went to Mauriel Zavala of Alief Taylor.
