Friendswood athletes qualified for Jr. Olympics

Friendswood athletes qualified for either the AAU Jr. Olympics and/or USATF Jr. Olympics recently. The athletes were all members of the All American Throwers of Friendswood with Coach Nick Capuano.

The young athletes qualified at the AAU Region 17 National Qualifier competition July 5-8 at Hightower High School Hall Stadium in Missouri City.

The USATF Jr. Olympics are in Lawerence, Kansas and underway now through July 30.

The AAU Jr. Olympics competition starts July 29 and runs through Aug. 5. The contests are located in Detroit, Michigan this year, according to Capuano.

“Both AAU and USATF are similar in that both are have Track Jr. Olympics,” Capuano said. “AAU also does the Jr. Olympics for other sports too. USATF is the official organization for the United States Track and Field.”

The top eight kids at each Jr. Olympics will receive a medal and the title All American.

“Our program has 23 Athletes this year and 21 qualified for the Jr. Olympics. I am very proud of my athletes,” Capuano said.

Capuano is a Friendswood High School graduate, class of 1997 and in his fourth year coaching youth throwers.

The Friendswood athletes that qualified for the Junior Olympics include Christi Wood, Evan Standley, Alex Skinner, Izak Standley, Mark Capuano, Raine Balahaw, and Mia Standley.

Wood qualified in shotput, discus, and javelin. At the AAU Region 17 National Qualifier she placed 2nd in discus, 3rd in shotput and 3rd in javelin for 15-16 year old girls.

Wood is also the Team Captain. She is a two time Jr. Olympian and will be a sophomore at Friendswood High School. She lettered as a freshman on Friendswood Lady Mustangs Track Team.

Evan Standley qualified for the AAU Jr. Olympics in the decathlon by placing 2nd at the AAU Region 17 National Qualifier for 15-16 year old boys. He is a two time Jr. Olympian and will be a freshman at Friendswood High School.

Skinner qualified for the AAU Jr. Olympics in shotput and discus. He won the AAU Region 17 National Qualifier for 14 year old boys in Discus and placed 2nd in Shotput. Skinner is a first time Jr. Olympian and with be an 8th Grader at Friendswood Jr. High.

Izak Standley qualified for the AAU Jr. Olympics in Javelin and Discus. He won the AAU Region 17 National Qualifier for 13 year old boys in javelin and placed 3rd in discus. Standley is a two time Jr. Olympian and will be an 8th Grader at Friendswood Jr. High.

Capuano qualified for the AAU Jr. Olympics in javelin and discus. He won the AAU Region 17 National Qualifier for 14 year old boys Javelin and 5th in discus. Capuano is a four time Jr. Olympian in track. He will be an 8th Grader at Westbrook Intermediate.

Balahaw qualified for the AAU Jr. Olympics by placing 3rd at the Region 17 National Qualifier in the 13 year old boys javelin. He is a first time Jr. Olympian and will be an 8th Grader at Friendswood Jr. High.

Mia Standley qualified for the AAU Jr. Olympics in the 10 year old girls shotput and race walk. She is a first time Jr. Olympian and will be a 5th grader at Windsong Intermediate.
