When Manvel entered their 2017 Homecoming District 23-5A contest against Willowridge, it wasn’t a matter whether the Mavericks would win, but by how much.
Manvel led at halftime 63-7 after only two quarters and obviously called off the dogs in the second half with only one fourth quarter score as Manvel head coach Kirk Martin made sure all had the opportunity to get in on the action.
It took less than a minute for the Mavs to score on their first possession of the game as Ladarius Owens scored on a 2-yard run with 11:12 left in the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead.
That would begin an avalanche of points against the hapless Eagles in the opening district game for both teams.
Owens scored his second touchdown of the game at the 8:09 mark on a 5-yard scamper as Luis Moreno added the PAT for a 14-0 advantage.
At the 6:45 mark, Manvel quarterback Kason Martin lofted a 48-yard bomb to Jalen Preston for a 21-0 lead.
Owens tacked on his third touchdown of the quarter on a 2-yard run with 2:35 left in the first period and Martin hooked up with Kam Scott with 1:28 left on a 6-yard scoring toss to build a 35-0 lead after 12 minutes of action.
It was more of the same in the second quarter as Manvel increased their lead to 42-0 when Martin connected with Kameron Pedescleaux for a 26-yard scoring pass at the 10:54 mark.
Willowridge finally got on the scoreboard when Chris Carter scored on a 14-yard run with 8:31 left in the second stanza making the score 42-0.
The Mavs closed out the first half with a 65-yard scoring strike from back-up quarterback Josh Coltrin to Pedescleaux and a 15-yard scoring run by Deneric Prince.
Martin was 13-of-14 passing for 321 yards and five touchdowns.
Prince led all rushers with three carries for 66 yards and one TD. Owens had three carries for five yards and three scores.
Preston led all receivers with three grabs for 75 yards and one TD.
Manvel will travel to face the Ball High Tors on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Courville Stadium.
