Hurricane Harvey postponed many things in and around Friendswood and the plans for the City’s Carousel Project is one of those things.
The Friendswood of Downtown Friendswood Association along with Keep Friendswood Beautiful presented information about the Carousel Project to Friendswood City Council on Aug. 7.
FDFA President Brett Banfield presented a video of the project as a conceptual design for future placement in Stevenson Park. The project was presented by Banfield, KFB’s Chair Sherry Goen and several other citizens at the meeting.
The group announced the project would be fully funded by donors and presented to the City as a gift.
Recently, FDFA has released a statement regarding the project. In it, the group announces that Carousel Park will be a legacy for the future and honor the legacy of Friendswood volunteers. The Carousel committee is committed more than ever to this legacy as a lasting tribute to those men and women who keep Friendswood’s heritage of volunteerism alive.
FDFA Advisory Board member Trish Hanks wrote the following in the FDFA statement released:
“The heroic action of the city’s first responders and private citizens to the danger posed by Hurricane Harvey is the most recent example of the volunteer spirit and dedication that is part of Friendswood’s legacy,” Hanks said. “First responders led rescue efforts throughout the city and due to the historical nature and scope of the disaster, many private citizens became unofficial first responders over the three-day rain event which totaled more than 50 inches.”
Volunteerism continued through clean up and recovery efforts.
“Neighbor helping neighbor was common place. It is this volunteer spirit and appreciation for the men and women who we count on everyday as first responders and all other volunteers that will be celebrated through the gift of the Carousel Park,” Hanks said.
Banfield also reported that in 2018 a decision will be made to determine the appropriate time to continue work toward raising the funds for the carousel.
Carousel information will be posted on the FDFA website at www.fdfa.org.
