The No. 2 Class 5A state-ranked Manvel Mavericks took care of business over the Elkins Knights 62-7 and in the process, presented veteran head coach Kirk Martin his 100th win at the helm of the Mavs football program.
Martin is the only head coach the Mavs had since the young school opened and he has seen his teams be mentioned as state title contenders particularly over the past seven years. He now has a 100-24 record and counting with his 2017 squad currently at 6-0 overall and 4-0 atop the District 23-5A leaderboard.
The Mavs have only three teams in their way for the 23-5A crown and they are Texas City (3-3, 2-2), Santa Fe (4-2, 2-2), and Galena Park (1-5, 0-4). Texas City and Santa Fe are still in the hunt mathematically to make the post-season.
Manvel continued their dominant path through their 23-5A opponents with a 62-7 thrashing of Elkins (2-3).
Quarterback Kason Martin put Manvel on the board first with a 13-yard scoring toss to Warren Laster with 4:56 left in the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead.
The second quarter added some cushion to the Mavs lead when Kason tossed a short pass to Quency Lewis for a 7-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 14-0 at the 3:15 mark of the second quarter.
Manvel took advantage of some Elkins miscues and added to more scores before the end of the first half.
Martin hooked up again with Laster, this time for a 39-yard scoring strike and a 21-0 lead with two minutes left before intermission and then the Mavs took advantage of a turnover and scored again as Ladarius Owens scored on a 5-yard run for a 28-0 halftime lead after Luis Moreno booted his fourth PAT.
Manvel scored in the third quarter on a Jermaine Brown 59-yard pass interception with 4:19 left in the period making the score 35-0.
Less than a minute later, Donavan Eaglin scored on a 1-yard plunge with 3:45 left in the third frame making the score 42-0.
Elkins scored their only touchdown in the third to cut the lead to 42-7, but Manvel’s Jalen Preston quickly answered with a 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to make the score 49-7 with 19 seconds left in the third.
Manvel added two more scores in the final stanza as Garrison Johnson scored on a 1-yard run to make the score 55-7 following a bad snap on the PAT.
Joshua Caltrain tallied the final score for the Mavs with 2:45 left in the game on a 7-yard quarterback keeper. The PAT hit the mark making the final score 62-7.
Garrison was the top ball carrier with 19 carries for 107 yards.
Martin finished the game hitting 13-of-22 passing for 237 yards and three TDs.
Laster was the top receiver with four catches for 60 yards and two scores.
Manvel finished with 506 total yards while Elkins finished with 258 total yards including only 60 yards on the ground. Manvel lost one fumble while the Knights lost two fumbles. Manvel also had two interceptions.
Manvel will travel to Texas City to face the Stingarees on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
