Field 34 at Centennial Park is being considered for a name change. City Council discussed at their Nov. 6 meeting to rename the field Mayor David JH Smith Soccer Field.

Nominated by Mayor Kevin Holland, the recommendation was made due to Smith’s civic contributions.

According to Holland, Smith has had and continues to leave a lasting imprint on the youth of the community as a volunteer and soccer coach for many years. He has helped positively shape the lives of many young individuals through his efforts.

“As mayor, David was instrumental in spearheading projects and partnerships to further Friendswood’s resources, ultimately leading to the emergence of first class facilities,” Holland said.

The City Council of the City of Friendswood may, at its discretion, name buildings and/or facilities. They follow criteria set in place for such an action.

Naming a facility is applied to buildings and facilities available to and operated for the benefit of the public and under the management and responsibility of the City. Facilities may be named after individuals either living or deceased, organizations or entities. Symbolic names reflecting historical or special events or circumstances may be used at the discretion of the Council.

The naming of a facility must also be consistent with the positive image of the community.

Naming will depend on the historical, financial or civic contributions made to Friendswood.
