Students off to a start at the 2017 Turtle Race Fun Run!

The Alvin ISD Education Foundation will host the 17th Turtle Race on Saturday, Feb. 10, at National Oak Park in Alvin. This the Title Turtle Race sponsor is Kelsey Seybold. The day will start with a fun run at 9 a.m. and the Turtle Race at 12 p.m. Community members, parents, students and staff are all encouraged to adopt turtles for the race. All proceeds from the Turtle Race benefit the students and teachers in the Alvin ISD through Innovative Teaching Grants, campus grants, and scholarships for students, teachers and paraprofessionals. Turtles can be adopted for $5 by filling out an adoption form, available at all Alvin ISD campuses, the Alvin ISD Tommy King Central Administration Building, as well as online at www.alvinisd.net/educationfoundation.

The day of the Turtle Race the adopted turtles will be taken to Mustang Bayou and gently dropped in from the bridge along the Tom Blakeney Hike and Bike Trail at National Oak Park in Alvin. The turtles will then “race” down the bayou to the finish line near the Adoue St. Bridge where they will be “scooped” out and the winners determined. The adopter of the first turtle to cross the finish line will win the first place prize of a travel voucher, sponsored by Stantec, valued at $1,500 to a destination of choice. The second place prize is a $1,000 shopping spree sponsored by David and Tracy Vela, and the third place prize is an iPad valued at $500 sponsored by Ron Carter Automotive Dealerships. Several other valuable prizes will be awarded to the adopters of subsequent turtles to cross the finish line. If weather does not permit the race to take place, a drawing will be held to determine winners.

Prior to the Turtle Race, the Foundation will conduct the 6th annual 5K Family Fun Run/Walk and 1K Kids Fun Run/Walk. The race will begin at 9 a.m. Individuals will receive a t-shirt for participating. This year the 5K course has been officially certified and it will be a timed race.
