Linda Jean (Corry) Bradshaw, age 56, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, after an 11-month battle with cancer. She died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends and comforted by the loving thoughts of those not present.
Linda was born on Nov. 15, 1961, in Bethpage, NY, to H. Richard “Dick” and A Elaine (Jennings) Corry. She attended Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, Texas, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a master’s in English Literature.
Linda’s passion was helping others learn. She begin her career in college, helping fellow students with writing and reading skills at the on-campus Student Learning Assistance Center (SLAC). After graduating, she became Director of SLAC. Many of the students who worked for Linda at during this time became teachers in their respective fields, a testimony to her inspiration and leadership. Upon leaving SLAC, Linda began a distinguished 26-year career in educational assessment. Linda’s management and content expertise helped develop quality products at Riverside Publishing, ETS, and NWEA. At the time of her death, Linda was Vice President of Education Content Products for Certica Solutions.
Despite these many accomplishments, Linda was most proud of her children—daughter Skyler, son Claburn and stepson Ben—in whom she instilled her love of learning, laughter and serving others. She also spent as much time as possible with her beloved granddaughter Taylor. Watching her children’s and granddaughter’s personalities and talents evolve was her constant delight.
For the past 17 years, Linda and her family have lived in Friendswood, Texas, where she was active in both the local Rotary Club and in her church, The Harbor. She made many wonderful friends in the area. Linda shared her educational expertise with them, helping many of their children improve their learning habits and their performance in school. She also shared her skills with the adults in her life as she helped her small bible study group interpret the meaning of C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters.
And Linda loved to entertain. She sustained a large, long-running Bunco group with her sister Kathy, hosted many small group Bible studies, and was known for her annual costume parties for both Halloween and Christmas. Her favorite activity, however, was family game night, attended only by Skyler, Claburn and Clay, her husband of 26 years.
In the months following her diagnosis, the natural environment surrounding Linda’s home was a source of great joy to her. She nurtured a wide variety of plants, enjoyed the yellow-crested night herons that nested in the trees above her house, and was ever entertained by the family cats, Lynx, Bob and Spencer. During her final days, she watched the sunlight filtering through the large picture windows in her living room, and even caught a glimpse of her favorite bird, a brilliant red male cardinal.
Linda is survived by husband Walter Claburn “Clay” Bradshaw of Friendswood; daughter Skyler Nicole Waychoff; son Richard Claburn Bradshaw of Friendswood; stepson Benjamin Robert Bradshaw and granddaughter Taylor Bradshaw of Beebe, Ark.; sister Barbara Calderone and husband Sam of Pittsburgh; sister Kathy Caton and husband Bob of Friendswood; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and loving friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother Jacque Corry, and nephews Sean and Bobby Caton.
