Kelsey Seybold was the title sponsor for the 17th Alvin ISD Education Foundation Annual Turtle Race and 6th Annual Fun Run, which was a little different this year due to strong thunderstorms that moved through the area Saturday morning. Due to the weather the Fun Run had to be cancelled and the turtles did not get dropped into the bayou to “race.” But nothing can dampen the spirits of the Foundation to award the 13 prizes that were donated by generous individuals and businesses. Since each adopted turtle is assigned a number and each number is assigned to the person who adopted the turtle, a drawing was held to determine the lucky winners. There were 11,599 numbers placed in a drum and Greg Bingham, principal of Fairview Junior High, whose secondary campus adopted the most turtles this year, drew out the 12 winning numbers. Sheldon the Turtle drew the 13th number for the slowest racer winner. Once final numbers are in, the Foundation expects to have raised approximately $80,000 for Innovative Teaching Grants, student and teacher scholarships and much more throughout Alvin ISD.
“It was a gray and rainy day but we still had a great group of people who showed up to watch Foundation president Amy Roudbari announce the winners,” said Alvin ISD Education Foundation Board member and Turtle Race chairperson Mary Jane Crumm.
The winning turtle was adopted by Easton Ortiz, a student at Dr. Red Duke Elementary, who won a $1,500 travel voucher provided by Stantec. Nathaniel Nava, a student at Alvin High School, won the second prize of a $1,000 shopping spree provided by David and Tracy Vela, and Scott Wilson, who won the third place prize of an IPad Mini provided by Ron Carter.
The fourth place winner was Marely Calzada who received a Kendra Scott gift package; Stacy Bracewell, who won fifth place and a family fun package that includes four tickets to SeaWorld and four tickets to the Houston Museum of Natural Science; Reed Bonn, who won sixth place with four day passes to Schlitterbahn Galveston; Abylee Padgett, who won seventh place with two Astros tickets and an autographed photo of Alex Bregmann and was donated by Jackie and Betty Thornton of Alvin Pest Control; Andrea Moreno, winning eighth place with two tickets to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Cody Johnson performance and a Jimmy Changas gift card donated by Warner and Melba Ervin; Anna Villanueva, who won ninth place with a pass to Top Golf and dinner at Spring Creek Barbeque; Stevie Marshall winning tenth place with a Sonicare gift basket donated by Pearland Pediatric Dentistry; and eleventh place, which was won by Jennifer Valdez and includes admission for two to the Alvin Music Festival, donated by Alvin Sunrise Rotary; and twelfth place was won by Jennifer Valdez and is Hilton Garden Inn Weekend Stay and Nothing Bundt Cake Certificate.
The last place number drawn would have been the “Slowest Swimmer” and that went to Laci Porter, who received a $100 Whataburger gift card.
Even though the rain and lightning prohibited the Turtle Race Family Fun Run from being held, runners still received gift bags and special commemorative t-shirts, which this year, were donated by BSN Sports.
