The JB Hensler College and Career Academy in Alvin ISD will have a dedication on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. The campus is located at 7381 Lewis Lane in Manvel.
The new campus was part of the $245 million bond in November 2015 and was completed in 2017 on 22 acres.
Along with the Hensler campus in the bond were also the following items to build: three new elementary schools, two middle schools, a new transportation center, a central district stadium as well as upgrades to the Alvin High School auditorium and Municipal stadium.
Alvin ISD is one of the fastest growing school districts in the Houston area with more than 23,000 students enrolled, and steady growth with approximately 1,000 new students coming into the district each year since 2012.
The college and career campus offers certifications in welding, veterinary technology, pharmacy technician, HVAC, graphic design, emergency medical technician, culinary arts, criminal justice, construction, cosmetology, collision repair, certified nurse assistant, certified medical assistant, barbering and information technology.
The campus is named for longtime Alvin ISD board member JB Hensler who retired from district service in 2010. He had served as a board member for 33 years with 15 of those years as president.
Hensler grew up eight miles north of Alvin. He attended Alvin Junior College and in 1963 received his pharmacy degree from The University of Texas in Austin. He worked in Lufkin for two years before returning to Alvin where he worked at Red Cross Drug. He later became the owner-operator of Medicine Man Pharmacy in Alvin. After 40 years, he continued to work at Walgreens.
