John Paul Echoff, age 75, of Santa Fe, passed away March 4, 2018 at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. John was born on March 21, 1942 to Lance L. Echoff and Lois Starkey Echoff and raised in his native city Houston, TX.
John was prideful of his service to his community and country serving to protect during his 6 years in the Marines, 25 years as a Texas Guard and 43 years of service with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. During his tenure with the HCSO, John set precedence for future crime stopper shows as the host of the local show: City Under Siege Houston’s Most Wanted for 9 years.
After John’s retirement from the HCSO he remained active in his community. As an avid gun collector and advocate for gun safety he used his expertise to teach gun safety classes. Many weekends were spent enjoying another hobby working security for a friend at a local Auction House. To support his community further he was a Mater Mason and Post Master of Serenity Lodge 1462 in Hitchcock, TX. He was also a charter member of Wahoo Grotto, and a member of the Chenault Riders Masonic Motorcycle Club.
Anyone who knew John knew him to be a proud man. He was proud of his accomplishments, his family and numerous friends. He enjoyed the many opportunities to travel with his wife Linn, visiting friends and family near or far. He was a very generous individual sharing his time and advice with anyone who needed him.
John will be missed by many. Anyone who knew him, knew their own version of the man and the person they grew to love and admire. It is without a doubt that there are many stories that could be told of John today that would show how cherished he is by so many.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Skelly; father, James Loyal Echoff; step-father, Clarence Hudson; brothers, James Skelly and Jack Lance; niece, Sherry Renfro Walker and great niece, Katie Walker.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Linn Echoff; step-son, Matthew Tyler and partner Rob Hurd; granddaughter, Kailtyn Tyler; step-son, Nathan Tyler and wife Susan Tyler; sister, Joanne Renfro; nephew, Billy Renfro and wife Sue Renfro; Van Walker (husband to Sherry Renfro Walker); grand nephews, Timothy, Jessie and Brandon Walker.
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546 (281) 992-7200.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at the Friendswood United Methodist Church, 110 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546, with Chaplain Lt. Shannon Bowdoin officiating.. Interment will follow at the South Park Cemetery in Pearland, TX.
Reception and fellowship for those who wish to join the family will be held at the VFW Post, 11230 Hwy 6, Santa Fe, TX 77510.
