Celebrating the 50th year of musicals at Friendswood High School continues as the Fine Arts Department and FHS theatre department just received the news that their 50th production, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” is nominated for every award they qualified for in the Theatre Under the Stars’ (TUTS) 16th annual 2018 Tommy Tune Awards.
The announcement was made by the award group through actor Jim Parsons, a former UH drama student, and current Emmy Award winner for The Big Bang Theory. Parsons made the announcement on the Tunes Facebook page.
FHS was the February site for the first Texas High School premiere of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” on stage in the Dr. Myrlene Kennedy Auditorium.
The production has 15 nominations for Tommy Tune awards in 15 categories.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is a love story of the beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda, the scorned bell-ringer Quasimodo and the dashing Captain Phoebus.
Winners will be announced at a special presentation April 17 at 7:30 p.m. at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts in Houston.
“We are excited about our nominations,” Director Kathy Powdrell said. “March is Theatre in Our Schools Month. Fine arts and performing arts are strong in FISD.”
