James Ray Poore Sr. passed from this earthly world to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, March 31st, 2018; he was 87 years old.

JR, as he preferred to be called, was born in Enid, OK on May 1, 1930 to William (Bill) and Tuna Poore. He attended Enid schools and received a degree in pipe design from Oklahoma A&M (now OSU). JR served his country in the Korean War with the 45th Division of the Oklahoma National Guard.

At the tender age of 15 JR met the love of his life, Janice Gosnell (his Petunia, as he affectionately called her). JR and Janice married March 9th, 1947 in Kingfisher OK and recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.

In his early career as a pipe designer JR worked in several states and made many lifelong friends. In 1975 he moved his family to Friendswood TX where he remained for the rest of his life. JR loved to tinker and fix things; combining this love with an entrepreneurial spirit he opened a second-hand shop in Webster TX (where The Hop is now) reselling items he had repaired. JR’s shop was named Poore Jims. After retirement, JR repaired bicycles. He enjoyed making sure that the kids in the family and everyone in the neighborhood had good bikes to ride, many in the Forest Bend subdivision and Alvin TX knew him as “The bike man”.

JR was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; he will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings. He is survived by his wife, Janice Poore; son James R. Poore Jr. (DeeAnn); daughter Liz Cotton (Peter); son Larry Poore (Jodi); daughter Carolyn Keane; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Never one to like fanfare and being the center of attention JR did not want a funeral service.
The family is dedicating a bench in his memory that will be placed in the park near his home for others to enjoy as he did…..holding the hand of a child, walking to the fishing hole, hearing the birds and enjoying being out of doors.

In lieu of a funeral, the bench dedication will be held in the Forest Bend Park, 4300 Laura Leigh Dr., Friendswood TX 77546 at the end of April or early May. Anyone who would like to attend is welcome; the date is pending. Interment will be in Enid, OK.

Condolences may be sent to the Poore family in care of Jeter Memorial Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhome.com.
