Former Friendswood athletic standout Cory Benavidas was named as the new Friendswood head baseball coach after former coach Steve Hecker resigned earlier last month.

Benavidas is a 2006 FHS graduate where he was an exciting football and baseball player in his own right. And now he is investing his life in the lives of the Friendswood student-athletes.

Since his return to Friendswood, he has served as an assistant football and baseball coach over the past three years.

“The only negative is that I’m losing a really good football coach because he did an excellent job working with our freshman quarterbacks and our receivers,” Friendswood athletic director and head football coach Robert Koopmann said. “He just connects with all of our kids. But it’s a good day for our program, and I know the kids are pulling for Cory.”

Benavidas received a B.S. degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Health Science from Stephen F. Austin University. He is married to wife, Courtney, who is a nurse in the NICU at Texas Children’s Hospital. He enjoys golf and fishing as his hobbies.
