History was made June 16 at the 10th Annual Pocket Pear Poker Speakeasy Party hosted by Keep Pearland Beautiful. The annual fundraiser broke all KPB records by raising $18,000 for the Joe Miller Environmental Scholarship Fund.
The evening included dinner, desserts and 1920-era music provided by The Traveling Murphys. Gangster and flapper outfits set the mood for the evening and highlighted the costume contest. After dinner, casino events were played.
Joel Bennett, a long time attendee of Pocket Pear went all-in at the final table winning the poker tournament for his second time.
The money raised at the event will be used for scholarships.
Each year since 2009, KPB has awarded scholarships to high school seniors in Pearland who demonstrate good stewardship of the environment and are pursuing higher education. In 10 years, $72,000 in scholarships have been awarded. In 2018, scholarships were awarded to six Pearland high school graduates, totaling $13,000.
Keep Pearland Beautiful is a 501(c)3 non-profit environmental organization affiliated with Keep Texas Beautiful, Inc. and Keep America Beautiful, Inc. The vision of Keep Pearland Beautiful is that Pearland will be the cleanest and most beautiful city in Texas.
