Joseph Anthony DeBonis (aka, Hot Dog Joe), 82, of Friendswood, TX passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 surrounded by family and friends. He was born February 24, 1936 to Daniel DeBonis and Angela Sabina DeBonis in Corona, NY. He was born and raised in Corona, NY by parents who immigrated to the USA from Piertagalla, Italy in the 1930’s. Joe was very proud of his Italian heritage.
As a young adult Joe began working for the Grumman Aerospace Corporations in Bethpage, NY building F-14’s and other aircraft. During the day between his shifts at Grumman, Joe sold Hot Dogs from a traditional Stainless Steele Hot Dog cart along the highway in Bethpage.
In 1977, Joe moved to Friendswood after he was transferred to Houston, where he assisted in the construction of The International Space Station.
Joe brought his Hot Dog Cart with him and began selling New York style hot dogs at festivals and events around the Friendswood and Clear Lake Area, where Joe was known as “Hot Dog Joe”. In his will “Hot Dog Joe” willed the Hot Dog Cart to the City of Friendswood, so they could continue the tradition of having New York style hot dogs at local festivals.
Joe was an active member of the Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Friendswood, The Knights of Columbus and his morning breakfast group the “ROMEO’s (Retired Old Men Eating Out).
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 9:00 A.M. with a Funeral Mass to follow at 10:00 A.M. at the Mary Queen Catholic Church, 606 Cedarwood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546 with Rev. James H. Kuczynski, M.S. officiating. Interment will be held in New York at a later date.
