Mayor Tom Reid has been framed and he is happy about it. An official portrait of the mayor will hang in Tom Reid Library. The unveiling was held recently at the site.
Artist Vicky Gooch was there and introduced the Mayor at the presentation.
Gooch, a portrait artist, shared her memories of meeting Reid for the first time. The facility in Pearland where her mom is receiving care was having a grand opening and Mayor Reid attended. It was his kindness and thoughtfulness with her mom that left an impression with her that would one day make Gooch want to do his portrait.
Gooch gave Reid four choices: simple or complex, inside or outside setting.
Reid chose outside where he so often is representing Pearland at events in the community.
He shared with Gooch about the early days of the city with so many cattle and pear trees.
“He liked the theme of yesterday, today and tomorrow and I thought it was a perfect theme for the man who has guided the City of Pearland from small town to thriving city,” Gooch said. “He wanted people to know that Pearland was just a quiet farm community when he first became mayor. We decided that I would paint in some references for yesterday and today. We chose to include tomorrow in the sense that Pearland is a gift to the future generations who will call it home.”
Gooch is a classical realist artist who has lived in Pearland for 12 years. She specializes in fine art oil paintings using the techniques of the Old Masters to create custom heirloom quality portraits. Her specialties include custom portraits, figurative and landscape paintings in oil on linen.
She will have a showing of her landscapes in oil beginning Dec. 13 at the Pearland Alliance for Art and Culture. The opening will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
The painting of the mayor is Gooch’s first official portrait.
The painting is almost five feet tall and will hang to the right of the entrance in the library.
“It is my hope that this portrait of Mayor Tom Reid will be a reminder of the gifts of his time and talents to the people of Pearland and an inspiration to tomorrow’s citizens to follow his example of civic involvement,” Gooch said. “It has been an honor for me to create this painting of Mayor Reid for the City of Pearland. I am very happy to know that it will hang in the library that bears his name.”
Tom Reid Library is located at 3522 Liberty Drive in Pearland. The painting will be hung on the wall as soon as the library installs lighting in the area. Library officials report that they hope to have the painting up within a week.
