The City of Pearland celebrated Arbor Day Dec. 17.

Pearland Urban Forester Jerry Bradshaw from Community Development accepted an Arbor Day Proclamation from Mayor Tom Reid at the regularly scheduled council meeting on that day.

Bradshaw also recognized the winners of the city’s First Annual Arbor Day Poster Contest, and presented the winners and their art teachers with ribbons and gift cards.

Bradshaw received approximately 250 art submissions with this year’s theme “Trees Are Terrific For A Healthy Environment.”

The winning artwork can be found at https://www.pearlandtx.gov/re…/about-pearland/urban-forestry.

First place winners included Lorelai Galloway in the Kindergarten Category from James Patterson Elementary; Vrishni Krishnan in the 3-5th Grade Category from Cornerstone Elementary; and Joseph Turloski in the 6-8th Grade Category from Garcia Middle School.

According to the City of Pearland, their Urban Forestry Program strives to maximize the aesthetic environmental and economic benefits that trees provide to city residents and visitors by preserving, managing and enhancing existing trees and other vegetation and promoting the reforestation of the urban area, through an active integrated program with community support and participation.

The Urban Forestry program exists to help residents select the appropriate trees for planting, to provide education about proper tree care and the benefits of trees, and to protect, preserve, and restore the urban forest canopy through code enforcement, planning and tree planting coordination.

The City of Pearland has been recognized as a Tree City USA for its efforts to preserve and enhance the urban forest.
