David Lee Smith, Jr. was born August 15, 1926 in Markham, Matagorda, Texas, weighing 5.5 pounds. He was the fourth child and second son of David Lee “Dave” and Ina Gullett Smith. His siblings: Mary Lee, William Clarence “Brother” and Joyce Berith “Joy” were aged 16, 14 and 7 years old.
In May 1928 he moved from Markham with his mother and siblings to join Dave at the ranch he was managing in Pearland, Brazoria, Texas. David lived and thrived in Pearland for more than 90 years. He left this earthly life on Sunday, March 3, 2019 encircled by his loving family.
David was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Frankie Walker Smith; his parents Dave and Ina; his siblings and their spouses: Mary Lee Smith Miller (Jack), “Brother” Smith (Katherine), Joy Smith Miller (Berry, Jr); two nieces, Ina Kathryn “Ikie” Miller, Mary Helen Miller; a nephew, Berry “Bo” Miller, III; and a step-great grandson, Benjamin Davis.
He is survived by three daughters: Martha Smith-Singleton, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Susan Smith Lenamon (Ben) and Leah Smith Bateman (Dwight), all of Pearland; four grandchildren: Amanda Davis Calhoun (Troy), Colorado Springs, Colorado, Terry David Davis (Molly), Traverse City, Michigan, Lacey Bateman Gartrell (John) and Dwight E “Chip” Bateman, Jr (Vanessa), all of Pearland; 10 great-grandchildren: Tyler and Amelia Calhoun, Elizabeth and Luke Davis, Cooper, Leah and Lucy Gartrell and Beau, Ann-Marie and Walker Lee Bateman.
While not sharing blood, but love, guidance and care, he is also survived by five step-grandchildren: Leslie Lenamon Lauderdale (Paul), Martin Lenamon (Johnna), Leigh Lenamon Davis (Kenneth), Jennifer Singleton Neely (Bryan) and Sarah Singleton Westmont (Jeffery), their children and grandchildren.
Six nieces and nephews: Nancy Jeffries Morse, John Robert Jeffries, DeWitt Green Jr, George E Green, Catherine Green Taylor and Lucille Anthony Cox.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2019. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway, Pearland, Texas.
