The Charleston Tea Room in Friendswood is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The popular tea room was opened by Carolyn Bartel Zimmer and a colleague after they visited tearooms throughout the Houston area. They chose Friendswood because of its quaint small-town feel and also it was a place that had no other establishments where people could enjoy each other’s company over a relaxing meal.

The tea room started with and can still boast over the original family recipes Zimmer brought to it but she is excited about its added menu items, capturing current trends.

“Over the years we have hosted birthday parties, anniversaries, political events, showers and any other memorable life events for our customers,” Zimmer said. “We even have held weddings at The Charleston.”

The most popular item is the Sampler with their famous baked potato soup. The also have homemade chicken salad, salads with raspberry vinaigrette and pimento cheese that are customer favorites.

“What makes The Charleston such a great place to eat is the food, the comfortable atmosphere where friends run into friends and a staff who loves what they do,” Zimmer said. “We strive to make people feel welcome and appreciated.”

Future plans include a delivery service for customers’ convenience. They are also adding new lines of loose leaf tea to expand their customers’ choices of raspberry and apricot teas that they currently serve.

Zimmer over the years has watched many of her customers and their children visit frequently. Now those children are bringing their own children.

“It is such a pleasure watching the new generations enjoying the experience that their families love over these 25 years,” Zimmer said.

Zimmer looks back and forward and finds the many things she loves the most.

“I love about The Charleston the rapport we have with our customers. They are family,” Zimmer said. “We also love catering events and being active in our community.”

The Charleston is located at 154 S. Friendswood Dr. in Friendswood. The tea room is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
