Watch artists in action at Chalk Walk on Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday, May 11 from 8 to 2 p.m. as they create sidewalk masterpieces.

The fifth annual Chalk Walk is held on the sidewalks at Captain Corner’s Shopping Center in Friendswood. Sponsors and artists can still sign up for a place at the event.

The event involves student and adult artists who create sidewalk masterpieces sponsored by friends, family and local businesses. A sponsor purchases 3 ft. by 3 ft. squares for $100 on the sidewalks at the local shopping spot. The artists use pastels. Those attending can walk the sidewalks and watch the artists at work.

Captain’s Corner Shopping Center is located at the intersection of FM 518 and FM 2351. Over 80 artists were matched with sponsored squares at last year’s event.

Chalk Walk was created by the Art Friends of Downtown Friendswood, a group of artists and supporters who came together in 2014 to create an art event to raise money for a positive cause.

Each year funds raised provide city wide public art for Friendswood.

Art Friends of Downtown Friendswood is made up of professional artists including: Betsy Miller, Colors of the Heart; Diane Fifer, Art Dwellers; and Jan Nemitz, retired Friendswood High School art teacher. Also serving on the committee are: Luis Briones, owner of Friendswood Frame & Gallery; Avril Forster, data base & graphics specialist; Sally Durand, retired hospital administrator; Lynn Shigekawa, retired non-profit consultant; DeNita Logan, retired from non-profit work; and Robyn Drake, graphic artist.

This year proceeds from previous Chalk Walk events are being used to purchase and donate  major pieces of public art to the City of Friendswood. The Art Friends recently placed a permanent sculpture by Dale Rogers in Stevenson Park titled “Four People” and one at the Animal Shelter on FM 528 by Rogers called “Dog and Cat.”
