Seven Pearland students are recipients of $20,000 in scholarships to high school seniors through the Joe Miller Environmental Scholarship Fund.

This year’s winners of the Joe Miller Environmental Scholarship Fund are Saami Baig, Anyssa Castorina, Vanshika Jhonsa, Eric Li, Delores VanHoose, Divjot Walia, and Helen Wang.

Keep Pearland Beautiful recently awarded the students at a dinner reception at Casa Ole. The Scholarship Review Committee hosted the dinner.

The committee received over 60 applications. The application included an essay on “Environmental Stewardship.” The committee interviewed several students and selected seven winners.

The community is encouraged to attend the 11th annual Pocket Pear Texas Hold’em & Casino Night on June 8 at the Pearland Lions Club located at 3350 S. Main in Pearland.

The event is a fundraiser for the scholarships.

The event is fun-filled evening of food, drinks, dancing, casino games and prizes.  Texas Hold EM and casino games will be offered. The poker tournament is limited to 50 players.

Each year KPB hosts the Pocket Pear to raise funds for the Joe Miller Environmental Scholarship Fund, benefiting high school seniors in Pearland pursuing higher education.

Having retired from the corporate sector, Joe Miller devoted his life to volunteerism with groups such as Keep Pearland Beautiful and the Boy Scouts in an effort to transform the city he called home for over 20 years. He also focused his passion for knowledge on poker, going “all in” with the Lakes of Highland Glen Poker Club, according to Keep Pearland officials.
