A required public hearing on the Friendswood ISD tax rate and budget is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 12, at the regular board meeting.
The 7 p.m. session takes place during the school board’s regular meeting at 402 Laurel Dr.
The district is proposing a combined tax rate of $1.2594 per $100 of assessed value, a decrease of .1076 from the current combined rate of $1.367 per $100 value, according to district documents.
The proposed tax rate and date for the public hearing were discussed by the board at its July 15 meeting. The budget and tax rate must be approved by the board before the new fiscal year begins on Sept. 1, 2019.
About 85 percent of the district’s general operating expenses is payroll, making up salaries for teachers, support staff, substitutes and benefit costs.
The district’s revenues come from federal, state and local sources, including property taxes.
During FISD trustees’ July meeting, the board moved forward with appointing a Citizens Advisory Committee to address how to fund the district’s future facility and maintenance needs.
Those needs were outlined in a long range facility plan completed this year by outside firm PBK. The committee was then created to represent “the entire community in the facility planning process by reviewing the Long Range Facility Plan and developing a bond recommendation under $125 million that will address the current facility needs of the district,” FISD board documents state.
The school board on July 29 toured FISD facilities to discuss the long-range plan.
Friendswood ISD meetings are usually held on the second Monday of each month beginning at 5:45 p.m. at 402 Laurel. Agendas and other information is available at myfisd.com.
