An arrest has been made the case of a booster club member indicted for taking funds meant for a Friendswood youth sport league that was recently buoyed by a local business stepping in to help.
Jennifer Elaine Gustafson, 36, was arrested Nov. 23 by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office. She is charged with felony theft between $2,500 and $30,000. Gustafson had served in the booster club that supports the Friendswood Youth Baseball Club, a nonprofit that recently began an initiative to upgrade the fields at Renwick Park.
The initial investigation began after irregularities were discovered in financial records for the booster club, a separate entity that supports the youth baseball league. That investigation reportedly showed unauthorized withdrawals from the booster club’s bank account by someone who had access to it. According to the indictment handed down by a Galveston County grand jury, the thefts occurred between Feb. 10 and Aug. 29.
“This news is devastating to (Friendswood Youth Baseball), which relies heavily on donations from the Booster Club to support the over 700 kids who play each year in the league,” league President Alyssa Tjaden said in a statement released Oct. 8.
After the news broke about the booster club issue, however, the local Hometown Bank contacted the league and presented a $10,000 check to the organization to help offset the damages.
Gustafson’s bond was set at $30,000. Court records indicate her current address is in southwest Houston.
