Manvel Community Outreach made a surprise visit to a local elementary school last week to spread some Christmas cheer.
Volunteers showed up at Don Jeter Elementary after a quick toy drive, delivering toys and bikes along with gifts for the staff.
The campus was selected, volunteers said, because of has a large population of economically disadvantaged students enrolled.
“We get most of our calls from counselors with needs at this school,” board member Cheryl Hood explained.
The outreach continued its holiday efforts over the past weekend, sponsoring the first mobile pantry at Grace Episcopal Church in Alvin in partnership with the Houston Food Bank. Food was distributed to 96 families. The group said they are looking forward to serving more people who are not able to travel to other food pantry sites.
The nonprofit formed in 2015 to continue another local food pantry after the church housing it was closed.
