The Friendswood Mustangs swim team captured the boys and girls Region 6-6A titles and are headed to the Class 6A state swim meet that will be held in Austin on January 19-20 at the UT Lee and Joe Jamail Swim C

    The boys won the region title with 311 points to finish ahead of Clear Falls (271), Fort Bend Clements (255), Deer Park (217), Clear Lake (159), Dawson (159), Kempner (150), Manvel (147), Clear Creek (100), Brazoswood (100), FB Travis (79), Pearland (49), Clear Springs (46), FB Dulles (45), Hightower (37), La Porte (32), Alvin (26), Clear Brook (24), and Dobie (12).
    The girls captured the region crown with 627 points to finish ahead of FB Clements (549.5), Clear Falls (481), Dawson (334), Deer Park (320.5), Pearland (273), Clear Lake (260), Brazoswood (229), Clear Creek (219), Clear Springs (208), Kempner (207), Manvel (168), FB Austin (144), Clear Brook (131), FB Travis (102), Alvin (77), North Shore (58), La Porte (57), FB Dulles (54), Hightower (37), Dickinson (24), and Dobie (20).
    “Both teams have been very focused and for that I would like to thank our team leaders,” Friendswood head coach John Little said. “Both teams performed outstandingly at the meet.”
    Individual honors went to: Jaden Bellina of Pearland who was named Girl Swimmer of the Meet. Mark Theall of Friendswood who was named Boy Swimmer of the Meet. Michael Claunch of Friendswood who was named Boy Diver of the Meet. Head coach John Little who was named Swim Coach of the Year.
    The state qualifiers for Friendswood include:
     The winning foursome of Katie Kosinski, Sydney Gurry, Gina Fossati, and Sadie Wilson in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:46.51.
    Katie Kosinski qualified with wins in the 50-yard (23.79) and 100-yard freestyle (51.68).
    Sydney Gurry won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.77.
    The Friendswood girls quartet of Katie Kosinski, Sydney Gurry, Gina Fossati, and Sadie Wilson also won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.93).
    The boys 200-yard Medley Relay quartet of James Tomerlin, Nico Monroig, Daniel Theall, and Mark Theall won that event in 1:34.80.
    Mark Theall won the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.75) and 100-yard butterfly (49.98).
    Michael Claunch won the 1-meter diving with a total score of 453.70 points.
    James Tomerlin won the 100-yard backstroke (50.57).
    Pearland’s Jaden Bellina was named Girl Swimmer of the Meet after she won the 200-yard IM (2:01.00) and the 100-yard butterfly (54.59). She is the defending state champion in the 200-yard IM.
    In 2015, Bellina became the first Pearland girl to win a medal at the UIL state swim meet. She won the first gold medal in school history with a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM and she also captured the bronze medal with a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.
    Bellina was also on the two Pearland relay teams that finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard Medley Relay.
    Dawson had one gold medal winner who qualified for the state swim meet.
    Sophomore Jennifer X Yu won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.15.
