Friendswood scored five of its 10 runs in the first two innings to defeat the Clear Brook Wolverines 10-6 in District 24-6A action.
Justin Waller was hit-by-a-pitch and took first base, starting pitcher Lael Lockhart blasted a one-out two-run home run over the right-field fence giving Friendswood a 2-0 lead.
Designated hitter Ryan Bertelsman drew a walk, took second base on a passed ball, and then was driven in on a single by left fielder Kevin Dupuis to make the score 3-0.
The Mustangs put two more runs on the board with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second.
Centerfielder Nick Dehoyos stroked a single into center and then stole second base. Dehoyos advanced to third base on an infield single by Waller, and a shortstop throwing error on the play allowed Dehoyos to score and Waller to reach second. Lockhart then dropped a single into left field to bring Waller home.
Friendswood tacked on another run in the bottom of the third with Dupuis leading off with a walk, getting to second on a sacrifice bunt, reaching third on a wild pitch and getting driven home on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Nick King.
Clear Book closed the gap with two runs to make the score 6-2.
Friendswood got a leadoff single by Dehoyos, who was driven home by a triple crushed to the centerfield wall by Waller. Lockhart followed that up by driving in Waller with a double, and courtesy runner Joseph Ehrlich came home on a shortstop throwing error to give the Mustangs a 9-2 advantage.
Clear Brook scored two runs in the fifth  and sixth innings, while Friendswood scored one more in the bottom of the fifth as Waller stroked an RBI single driving in shortstop Trace Mertel who had a leadoff double.
Lael Lockhart had a standout day at the plate, going 4-for-4 (including a home run and two doubles) with four RBIs. He also was solid on the mound as he went 4 2/3 innings with four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks and had eight strikeouts.
Also having multi-hit games for the Mustangs were Waller (3-for-3, three runs, two RBIs) and Dehoyos (2-for-4, two runs).
Friendswood wraps up the first half of District 24-6A play with a solid 5-2 record in a district where the race for first place is still wide open.
“I don’t think there’s ever a time to be comfortable in this district,” Friendswood head coach Steve Hecker said.
