After 30 years of service, Dale Pillow has announced her retirement from the Adult Reading Center.

Founded in 1987, The Adult Reading Center (ARC) is a local non-profit organization whose mission is to transform lives through education by providing a nurturing environment that improves reading, writing and basic communication skills. ARC offers its students classroom instruction, individual tutoring, and computer-based training. Furthermore, ARC partners with community organizations to provide its students opportunities to transition into career training.

Dale Pillow is a founding member of the Adult Reading Center and has served as its President & CEO since 2001. She graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio with a B.A. degree majoring in English and minoring in Psychology.

Dale’s volunteer roles in the community bring focus to adult literacy. These include actively serving on the Board of Directors for Literacy Texas since 2002. She served as President of that Board from 2006 to 2008. Dale has also served on the Advisory Board of the Clearinghouse Project for Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning at Texas A&M; Program Advisory Committee for ProLiteracy, the national coalition of non-profit literacy providers; the Advisory Board of the Child Development Council of Brazoria County; the Advisory Board of the Northern Brazoria County Education Alliance; and the Advisory Board of Keep Pearland Beautiful. She was appointed by Mayor Annise Parker to the Board of Directors of the Houston Center for Literacy in February of 2010 and served until 2014.

Pillow’s dedication for community improvement along with her leadership has exceeded the world of literacy. She has worked ceaselessly to better her community through various organizations, such as the Pearland Library Board, the City of Pearland Charter Review Commission, City of Pearland Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Pearland Code Compliance Assistance Volunteer Program, the Pearland Economic Development Corporation Strategic Plan Steering Committee and the Pearland 20/20 Committee, and the Keep Pearland Beautiful Advisory Board.

Additional accolades presented to Dale Pillow:
2005 Citizen of the Year – Pearland Chamber of Commerce
2010 Community Builder Award – The C.F. Spencer Masonic Lodge of Pearland
2010 Local Heroes Award – Bank of America
Daily Point of Light Honoree (2011) – Points of Light Institute, est. by President George H.W. Bush.

Pillow is a champion for vital causes; she inspires others, and has a special and significant impact on individuals, families, and her community.

“Dale is the matriarch of the Adult Reading Center and her passion for serving others is what has built it into the successful organization that it is today,” said Seth Thompson, Chairman for the ARC Board of Directors. “We are fortunate that she is leaving us with a strong foundation and vision for the future. It has been her devotion and never-ending efforts for program expansion that has, and will continue, to inspire us to greater heights,” added Thompson.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the adult learners in our community as President & CEO of the Adult Reading Center for the past 17 years. This has been my heart and passion for over 30 years and I am going to miss the Center; however, I have every confidence that the Board will select a highly qualified individual to lead the Center forward,” said Dale Pillow, President & CEO, Adult Reading Center.

The organization is conducting a search for a new President and CEO. Pillow will continue to serve as President/CEO through March of next year.
