The Friendswood Lady Mustangs soccer team have put one of their best teams on the field as they are now 22-1 overall and 16-0 in district as the No. 5 state-ranked 5A team.
All 22 of Friendswood’s victories have been shutouts with their only loss this season coming at the hands of Frisco Rock Hill, 2-1, at a tournament back on January 7.
“Our defense is where we hang our hats, so to speak,” Friendswood head girls soccer coach Laura Peter said.
Friendswood recently faced Santa Fe and came away with a 3-0 win between the two best teams in the district.
The Lady Mustangs smothering defense controlled the Santa Fe offense while the Friendswood offense overcame a strong defensive effort by the Lady Indians to register the win.
Defense prevailed for both teams in the first half as neither was able to penetrate the other’s goal.
It became only a matter of time for the Friendswood offense to find its scoring range as the two teams battled in the second half.
In the 51st minute of the second half, Olivia Schmidt curled in a corner kick into the Santa Fe goal for a 1-0 lead.
In the 68th minute, Lauren Littleton managed to fire in a goal off a deflected shot giving the Lady Mustangs a 2-0 cushion.
The final goal came in the 73rd minute when Cameryn Peter sent the ball over to Schmidt who scored her third goal to make the final score 3-0.
Friendswood ended the regular season with an 8-0 win over Texas City to finish with a 16-0 undefeated record in district play.
The Lady Mustangs — returning 10 lettermen from last season’s team and with five newcomers — have their sights set on another deep playoff run after reaching the Class 5A state semifinals in 2021.
“Last year, we had more seniors, but talent-wise, this year’s team has a lot of talent,” Peter said.
