The Friendswood diamondmen completed their most successful season in school history when they advanced to the Class 5A state title game while posting a 30-8-1 overall record.
While head coach Cory Benavides had outstanding players on the team that contributed to the overall success this season, two players were recently honored as the All-Greater Houston “Pitcher of the Year” and “Hitter of the Year.”
Jacob Rogers earned the top pitcher award after he finished with a 1.65 ERA over 76 innings while also collecting 89 strikeouts, and 33 walks.
The righthander beat Mansfield Legacy in the 5A state semifinals 4-2 to send the Mustangs to the state title contest. Rogers allowed only five hits in six innings.to get the win.
Dylan Maxcey was Rogers battery mate and they proved to be one of the best pitcher/catcher combinations in the nation. Maxcey certainly did his part as he was named as the top hitter with a .468 batting average that included 59 hits, 21 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 31 RBIs, 37 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases. He also posted a .989 fielding percentage behind the plate.
The pair will continue being teammates as Rogers and Maxcey will both continue their education and playing careers for the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock.
