Animal shelter in old location for now

Date:

The closing of Pearland Animal Services and relocation back to its previous facility on Old Alvin Road is only temporary, the department says.

Recent rain uncovered some drainage issues in the outside kennels at the new Shari D. Coleman Pearland Animal Shelter and Adoption Center on Freedom Drive.

Financed through a bond passed in 2019, the new shelter and adoption center opened in spring 2022 as part of the city’s public safety complex. Named for former animal services manager, the late Shari D. Coleman, the facility can house up to 106 dogs and 98 cats and includes storage, a grooming area, spay and neuter clinic and laundry.

A timeline for repairs has not yet been announced, but the animals were scheduled to be relocated to the Old Alvin Road shelter during the first part of this week so that the work at the new shelter will not disturb them.

The Animal Services Department will remain available for calls for service at 281-652-1970. To report an injured or aggressive animal, call 281-997-4316.
