Pearland tunes in with pride as series begins

Date:

The Little League Baseball World Series begins today with 20 teams from around the globe. The event is set to take place in Williamsport, Pennsylvania from Aug. 17-28.

Pearland will be representing the Southwest region as they play their first game tomorrow against the Mid-Atlantic team from Holidaysburg, Pennsylvania. The game will be televised on ESPN 2 starting at 7pm. If Pearland wins they will advance to the next game on Monday. If they lose, they go to the elimination bracket and play again on Saturday.

The Little League Baseball World Series is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year with an expanded field of four additional teams which expands the competition to a total of 20, the largest the tournament has ever hosted. Half of the teams will be from the United States, and the other half will come from other countries.

International teams will be participating for the first time since 2019. The 2020 LLWS was canceled due to COVID-19 and only US teams were allowed to participate in 2021. Taylor North Little League from Michigan won the championship last year.

International teams tend to do well in the LLWS. Chinese Taipei holds the record with 17 titles and Japan is second with a total of 11, five of which they have won since 2010. In the US, California holds the most titles with seven.
