When one thinks of a library, it’s often of hushed whispers, rows of books, and quiet corners. However, on September 30th, the Friendswood Public Library transformed into the fantastical world of Lewis Carroll, whisking attendees away to a realm where expectations were overturned and imagination reigned.
The fundraising gala, aptly themed “Through the Looking Glass,” turned the library into Alice’s Wonderland. Guests were greeted by the White Rabbit and a towering Alice as they went down the rabbit hole.
The event’s décor stayed faithful to Carroll’s dreamlike vision. Oversized mushrooms sprouted from corners, roses painted red were arranged among hedgerows, and neon tapestries teased guests to take a second, or perhaps third, look. Every corner of the library whispered of mystery and magic, evoking a blend of nostalgia and wonder for attendees.
The highlight of the evening, however, were the performers. The Mad Hatter hosted an eccentric tea party, serving a blend of laughter and boba tea that left guests bemused. The enigmatic Cheshire Cat slinked around, grinning ear to ear, her presence fleeting, leaving guests grinning. The imperious Queen of Hearts ruled with a blend of charm and cheek reminding everyone of the whimsical nature of Wonderland.
“It’s like stepping into a dream,” said one enchanted attendee. “I’ve read the book and watched the movies, but this… this is like being inside the story.”
The evening wasn’t just about entertainment. The gala aimed to raise funds to support the library’s new makerspace which will be equipped with 3D printers and tools to aid hobbyists and curious students. The event was a testament to the library’s vital role as not just a place for books, but as a community hub and a space for creativity and imagination.
Friendswood Public Library has always been a beacon of learning and community in the area, and the gala’s success underscores the community’s commitment to keeping its doors open, its shelves stocked, and a variety of programs for all ages.
