ACC Board Selects Pyburn for Regent Vacancy

Date:

The Alvin Community College Board of Regents voted unanimously during a meeting on December 7 to appoint former board chair Mike Pyburn to the regent position recently vacated by Jake Starkey.

Starkey resigned from Position 6 in November and was first elected to the board in 2020.

Pyburn will serve as a regent until the upcoming special election on May 4, 2024.

Pyburn served 18 years on the board and stepped down in 2020. He returned on an interim basis to replace regent Andy Tacquard in 2022.

“It’s an honor to be asked by the board to return to this role,” Pyburn said. “I look forward to addressing the issues facing the college.”

The special election for the remaining two years of the term will run along with three other positions up for election in the May 4 general election.
Positions 1, 2, and 3 are currently held by Regent Kam Marvel, Chair ‘Bel Sanchez, and Regent Dr. Jim Crumm, who will be on the ballot for the election. Filing for the election will begin on January 17 and close on February 16.

During the meeting, regents approved hiring several faculty members for Cybersecurity, English, Mental Health and Addiction Counseling, and Computer Science.
