Plans for the New Year are well underway in Alvin ISD, where a student art exhibit has grown into an annual outing for families.
“This has turned into a real event,” Superintendent Carol Nelson said, describing the Jan. 19 Alvin ISD Rodeo Art Open House.
Set from 5 to 7 p.m. at Liberty Hall, Freedom Field, the exhibition spotlights work by kindergarten through 12th grade students selected for the district to enter this year’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program.
The Jan. 19 exhibit will be the public’s first look at this year’s qualifying artwork. The evening includes a live band and food vendors that include Jax Burgers and Rollie’s Ice Cream.
AISD’s Rodeo Art Night is free and open to the community. All of Alvin ISD’s campuses participate in the exhibit. A panel of judges selects a set number of entries from elementary, junior high, and high school artists to advance to judging by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at NRG Stadium in Houston.
The more than 50-year-old School Art Program at the Houston Rodeo currently involves more than 130 Houston area school districts and receives thousands of entries. At the Houston event, Best of Show, Gold Medal, and Special Merit awards are selected in each category and are then eligible for the show’s School Art Auction.
