West Pearland Library Learns about Lunar New Year February 2nd

Date:

Lunar New Year is spectacular, loud, and, for many cultures across Asia, the most important festival of the year.

The month-long celebration begins on December 8th and ends with the ‘Lantern Festival’ on January 15th, both in the lunar calendar. The actual New Year’s Day falls on February 10th this year.

In many cultures, each year is also associated with an animal from the Chinese zodiac. Often, the animals are the same across different Asian countries, including China, South Korea, North Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Singapore, and Cambodia. This is the Year of the Dragon.

Kick off the start of the Lunar New Year on Friday, February 2nd, from 6 pm to 7:30 pm with a special program by Professor Zao Cheng at the West Pearland Library. The celebration will feature a presentation, along with calligraphy, paper cutting, a chopsticks game, a photo booth, and more.

Born to an English teacher and a history professor, Ms. Zao Cheng was fascinated by Western culture from an early age. Her passion for the Eastern culture grew, along with homesickness, after she came to America to pursue her Master’s degree.

This program initially started with a self-entertaining presentation. She now teaches Humanities for fun at San Jacinto College.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the West Pearland Library, a non-profit 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt group committed to supporting the library in serving library users’ educational, information, and recreational needs.

The celebration is free and for all ages. It will be held in the Teaching Theater at the West Pearland Library, 11801 Shadow Creek Parkway in Pearland. For more information, contact the West Pearland Library, a Brazoria County Library System branch, at 713-436-0995.

BCLS is a dynamic system of libraries providing convenient access to quality and popular resources to meet the educational and recreational needs of Brazoria County residents of all ages.
