Gardeners to learn about Texas Superstar® plants

Date:

By Karolyn Gephart

Spring will be here soon, and it is not too early to start planning what plants will be placed in home gardens and landscaping. Since the weather has been a problem for county gardens, maybe it is a good time to look closely at plants designated by Texas A&M as Texas Superstars®.

Etie Brianna

Texas Superstars®: Strong and Stunning Plants for Texans will be presented at the Heritage Gardeners meeting on February 1, 2024, beginning at 9:30 am in Friendswood.

Galveston County Master Gardener Briana Etie will present useful information about Texas Superstar® plants, tested for their quality and reliability as they perform in our Texas climate, as well as their common availability to gardeners.

According to www.tamu.edu, Texas Superstar plants are specially recognized for superior performance in tough growing conditions in Texas. Texas Superstar plants are specially recognized by Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service for superior performance in tough growing conditions in Texas.

Texas Superstars® are tested extensively in locations representing the many Texas ecoregions that vary in winter cold, summer heat, and various rainfall amounts.

Plant experts from Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas Tech University, county AgriLife Extension horticulturists, the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association and their member plant producers, and the Texas Department of Agriculture all cooperate in evaluating the adaptability of potential Texas Superstars®.
Each plant chosen must perform well in a variety of landscapes, be easily marketable, and be producible in sufficient numbers to meet consumer demand.

Etie will provide information on the plants and favorites in the area. The meeting is free and open to all who are interested in gardening.

The meeting will take place at the garden clubhouse at 112 W. Spreading Oaks (behind the Friendswood Library).
