Windsong 2nd Graders Take the Helm in Friendswood City Council for a Day

Date:

In an innovative educational experience, second-grade students from Windsong Elementary School were granted the unique opportunity to step into the shoes of city leaders during the Kids’ Council for a Day event organized by the City of Friendswood.

The City Council chambers were transformed into a vibrant hub of youthful governance as the young students assumed their roles on the dais, replacing the council and staff for a special council meeting held on Monday night.

Jordan Cross, Olivia Balderas, Cash Eakin, Dominic Banuelos, Rhemy Eubanks, Greyson Winkler, Yazhini Vijayal, Charlotte Jenkins, Alyssa Thomas, Milena Gonzalez, and Kabir Desai were the budding policymakers invited to this distinctive event.

During the session, the students actively engaged in a mock governance simulation, culminating in the unanimous approval of a city resolution declaring February 6, 2024, as Windsong Elementary School Day in the City of Friendswood, marking a memorable celebration of the school’s contributions to the community.

“This event not only educates our young citizens about the functions and responsibilities of local government but also empowers them by giving them a voice in City Hall,” stated Mayor Mike Foreman.

The Kids’ Council for a Day initiative reflects the city’s commitment to fostering civic engagement and understanding among its younger residents.

The students’ participation and the resolution passed serve as a symbol of the potential and promise of the next generation. The City of Friendswood looks forward to continuing this tradition, inspiring more students to learn about and participate in local governance.
