Alvin ISD school board this month named assistant coach Tyrone Greene as the new athletic director and head football coach for Shadow Creek High.

Green has also served at Manvel High as assistant offensive line coach, assistant varsity track coach, and spent 12 years at Houston ISD. He has been at Shadow Creek High for eight years.

“He was there when the school opened and the program started,” Superintendent Carol Nelson said.

“I’m truly blessed, first I want to thank God,” said Green, who attended the Feb. 13 board meeting with his young son and other family members. “The opportunity to serve the Alvin ISD– this is something I will not take lightly.”

SMART TAGS

Also approved was the implementation of “smart IDs” for bus riders. The technology allows parents and bus drivers to know when a student gets on and off a district school bus.

A pilot program was conducted last Spring at Mark Twain Elementary.
“It alerts us if a student is getting on the wrong bus or is getting off at the wrong stop, which is a major concern,” Transportation Director Greg Bingham said in a memo to the board.

The district plans to roll out the smart ID program for all its bus riders in the fall of 2024.

ELECTION

Four Alvin ISD school board seats will be decided in the district’s May 4 election.

Up for election are Position No. 1, held by A.J. Johnson, Position No. 2 held by Cory Scott, and Position No. 3 held by Cheryl Harris. Also on May 4, a special election will be held for Position No. 7, currently being held by board appointee Gabe Garza.

“This is an unexpired term due to expire in 2025 due to the resignation of Trustee (Vivian) Scheibel in 2023,” Superintendent Nelson said. “The winner of the race will serve a two-year term.”
