Hurricane Beryl made landfall as a category 1 in Matagorda early Monday morning, bringing significant destruction across the state and claiming three lives in the Houston area. As the storm passed, it left over 3 million people without power, with Friendswood among the affected areas.
In response to the widespread power outages, Centerpoint Energy and Texas New Mexico Power have mobilized their teams, working around the clock to restore electricity. Residents are urged to remain patient as these crews navigate challenging conditions to bring services back online as quickly as possible.
The City of Friendswood is also taking steps to aid residents in the storm’s aftermath. Contractors have been mobilized and will begin debris pickup early next week. To facilitate this process, residents are advised to place all debris by the curb, ensuring it is not put in the street. While most debris does not need to be bundled for pickup, specific instructions have been provided for certain materials: fence debris should be cut into sections and stacked, and leaves should be bagged.
For those without power seeking a place to charge their devices or escape the sweltering heat, the Friendswood Library and the Friendswood Activity Center have opened their doors to provide relief.
City Manager Morad Kabiri stated, ” The City of Friendswood is fortunate to have weathered Hurricane Beryl with minimal damage. I appreciate the efforts of the city’s staff prior, during and in the aftermath of the storm as well as the resilience of our residents as clean up begins.”
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official city channels for updates on power restoration and debris removal schedules. For more information and assistance, residents can contact the City of Friendswood at (281) 996-3200 or visit the city’s official website.
