Pearland Junior High South Theater Program Earns Prestigious Award of Distinction

Date:

Pearland Junior High South (PJH South) is proud to announce that its Theatre program has been honored with the Award of Distinction from the Texas Educational Theatre Association (TxETA.) This recognition marks the first time a Pearland Independent School District campus has achieved this prestigious accolade.

PJH South’s Theatre program, led by Mrs. Gretchen Meyer, has been named an Exemplary Campus, the highest honor awarded to school programs by TxETA. This award highlights the program’s commitment to theatre education excellence and its impactful community contributions.

The rigorous criteria for the Award of Distinction include:

• Staging multiple productions each year.

• Providing performance opportunities for students with disabilities in main-stage productions.

• All theatre students must observe and evaluate a live production each semester.

• Encouraging all theatre students to participate in auditions and attend rehearsals outside of the school day if cast.

• Offering leadership opportunities for students in all areas of technical theatre.

• Promoting programming and performances through campus communication, parent groups, social media platforms, and district communication.

• Faculty participation in TxETA and other professional theatre arts organizations.

• Participation in the UIL One-Act Play (OAP) and Clinic yearly.

• Student participation in at least one event of the Theatrical Design Contest, including the International Thespian Society and the new UIL Theatrical Design Contest.

• Providing students with opportunities to work with theatre technology such as shop tools, sewing machines, fog machines, lighting and sound boards, lighting instruments, and projections.

• A budget supported by district and campus contributions.

• Having at least one administrator attend two performances and/or contests throughout the year.

The PJH South Theatre program’s dedication to inclusivity, excellence in education, and fostering a love for the arts has exemplified the excellence Pearland ISD strives for in all its programs. This Award of Distinction from TxETA is a proud moment for the entire Pearland ISD community.
