City rejects alcohol variance for store

Pearland city leaders on Sept. 9 rejected a request by a grocery seller seeking to sell beer and wine at a location near Shadow Creek High School.

The small grocer, which proposed a location at 11836 Broadway St., sought an exception to the city’s alcohol distance regulations, which ban alcohol sales within 300 feet of a school.
The City Council voted 5-2 against granting the variance.

“This literally abuts the property line,” Councilman Tony Carbone said. “I struggle with this one.”
