The Shadow Creek Sharks caused an oil spill Friday night, taking down the Pearland Oilers 41-28 in a game that was not as close as the score and the statistics belie.
The Sharks dominated early, taking a 20-0 lead before Pearland would get its first score, and never looked back. After losing Sr. QB Joseph Stewart Jr. for the season to a broken leg, Shadow Creek gave the start to sophomore Dante Mayes.
Shadow Creek opened the scoring with a 64-yard touchdown run by sophomore Tristan Willis. The PAT snap was muffed, resulting in a 6-0 game.
Willis scampered into the end zone for another 10-yard touchdown run on th Shark’s next possession, pushing the lead to 13 points. On the next Shark possession, the Oilers intercepted a pass and raced to the end zone, only to fumble on the 1-yard line, then fumble again and lose the ball to the Sharks.
Mayes finished the drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jr. Chris Stewart. Stewart would score again on a 34-yard touchdown pass and add another touchdown on a 30-yard run from a direct snap, leading Shadow Creek with 18 points.
Senior Alex Kirkland added a rushing touchdown, and senior Aiden Bui hit 5 PATs.
The Oilers had difficulty getting started, with their first score coming late in the 2nd quarter. Pearland would be held scoreless in the third but finished strong, scoring 21 in the 4th quarter. Senior Tate Chisholm had 2 rushing and 1 receiving touchdowns to lead the Oilers with 18 points. Senior Cam’ron Bush added another receiving touchdown, and senior Zane Adler added 4 PATs.
With the win, Shadow Creek stands atop the district leaderboard, undefeated in district play, while Pearland drops to second place.
The Sharks travel to South Houston on Thursday evening in a Halloween night district matchup, while the Oilers have a bye week before hosting South Houston on November 7.
