Pearland’s Medical Center Drive is being renamed in memory of HCA Healthcare Pearland CEO David Wagner.

At the request of HCA, Pearland City Council on Monday unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance renaming a portion of Medical Center Drive to David Wagner Way.

Wagner, who was appointed CEO of the hospital in 2016, died unexpectedly on August 23, 2024, at age 64.

“He was the first president and CEO of that hospital in town, and he was a great member of our community who contributed in many, many ways outwardly and behind the scenes,” Mayor Kevin Cole said. “David was one of those quiet giants that when he told you he was going to do something, he just did it.”

Under Wagner’s leadership, HCA Pearland in 2022 earned a nationwide “Best Places to Work” recognition from Modern Healthcare. He served on numerous volunteer committees including the Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

Also approved was the first reading of a request to rename Market Place Blvd south of Shadow Creek Parkway to HCA Healthcare Blvd.

The final reading of the ordinance will be at the March 24 meeting.
