Pearland Junior High West celebrates the outstanding achievements of four 8th-grade students who participated in the local Civics Bee competition. Following submitting essays in February, these students demonstrated exceptional knowledge of civic principles and government structures, with two students earning top honors and advancing to the state level.
The PJHW students who participated in the local competition, sponsored by PJHW teacher Casey Loe, are:
Zoey Rui, First Place: Awarded $500 and will advance to state.
Janvi Shah, Second Place: Awarded $250 and will advance to state.

The Civics Bee, a national competition sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and supported locally by the Pearland Chamber of Commerce, provides a platform for middle school students to showcase their understanding of civic principles, government structures, and the responsibilities of citizenship.
The competition challenged students in two phases. First, they submitted essays identifying a problem within their community and proposing a local-level solution. The students then engaged in rigorous quizzes designed to test their comprehension of fundamental civics concepts.
“I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication shown by all four of these students,” Casey Loe said. “Their insightful essays and strong performance in the quizzes demonstrate a deep understanding of civics, and I am especially thrilled that Zoey and Janvi will be representing Pearland at the state competition.”
Beyond the competitive aspect, the Civics Bee is crucial in fostering a deeper appreciation for democracy and encouraging students to become active and informed citizens within their communities.
