Brazoria County Library Announces Overdue Fine Amnesty Period

Date:

In an effort to welcome everyone back and remove barriers to library access, the Brazoria County Library System is launching an Overdue Fine Amnesty Program from May 1 to May 31, 2025.

During the month of May, all overdue fines will be waived — no questions asked. Patrons can return late items and have their accounts cleared without penalty, even if items are months (or years) overdue. The amnesty only applies to late fines; patrons will still be responsible for charges regarding damage to items, replacement costs for lost items, cleaning or processing fees, and collection agency charges.

“This is our way of saying: we miss you and want you back,” said Library Director Lisa Loranc. “Whether it’s been a while since you’ve visited or you’ve been holding onto a book you thought was too late to return — now’s the perfect time to come in.”

Key Details:

  • Amnesty runs from May 1 to May 31, 2025
  • Applies to all overdue materials, regardless of how long they’ve been out
  • Lost or damaged item fees and cleaning fees still apply, but staff will work with patrons on options
  • Collection agency charges cannot be waived.

The library hopes this initiative will encourage former users to reconnect, explore new services, and rediscover the welcoming space the library provides.
