For Pearland families headed into summer on a tight budget, the Tom Reid Library and West Pearland Library have announced a slate of activities with no travel costs or entry fees required.

Kicking off the season at 2 pm June 5 at the Reid library is a Welcome to Summer Reading Party with chalk art, games, a scavenger hunt, snacks, and information on the summer reading challenge.

At the West Pearland Library on June 5, two adult crafting sessions featuring Ice Bandana Crafting are scheduled at 2 pm and 6 pm. A program on Texas Reptiles for children is scheduled for multiple sessions at 10 am, noon, 2:30 pm, and 4 pm.

“Public libraries remain one of the last open and truly public places,” Pearland Library Advisory Board chair Camille Sullivan told city leaders this month while thanking the community for its investments in the library. “Our libraries serve every age and stage of life.”

Events for adults at the Tom Reid Library include a jigsaw puzzle exchange at 6:30 pm on June 10, a “Reading in Color” discussion at 6:30 pm on June 23, and an adult summer reading party at 6:30 pm on July 28.

School-age children’s programs include “Birds of Prey” at 3 pm June 11, Texas A&M Chemistry Road Show at 2 pm June 18, Texas Reptiles at noon, 2 pm and 4 pm June 25, “Chicks to Children” presented by Texas A&M AgriLife at 2 pm and 3 pm on July 2, “NASA Orbital Outreach” at 2 pm July 9, and “Reading with Orbit” at 1 pm and 2:30 pm July 31, among others.

Teen events at the Reid library include programs such as “Water Wars” at 5 pm June 11 and “Galaxy Jars” at 5 pm July 16.

At the West Pearland Library, children can see a puppet show at 2:30 pm June 11, learn about lightning at 2:30 pm June 18, and make their own suncatchers during a 2:30 pm craft time on June 25. Since this summer’s theme is “Color Our World,” a rock painting session for all ages is set for 2:30 pm. July 19.

Programs and events at all Brazoria County library branches are free and open to the public, including a June 28 water balloon war at the Brazoria branch, “Paint Like Monet” adult art night on June 17 at the Angleton branch, and plant swap for all ages June 14 at the Lake Jackson branch.
